WYLFA nuclear replacement on the Horizon

WYLFA on the Isle of Anglesey, North Wales, is one step closer to hosting one of the UK’s first new generation nuclear power plants.Horizon Nuclear Power, a consortium of Eon and RWE, confirmed that WYLFA was its preferred site for building a new nuclear power plant in the UK. The company plans to seek planning application in 2012, with a view to commissioning the new reactor in 2020.The company won’t seek planning approval for its second potential site, Oldbury-on-Severn, until construction at WYLFA is underway.Horizon has yet to decide which model reactor to use. The company is still in discussions with Westinghouse and Areva, both of which are currently seeking a license for their reactors in the UK, and will select a preferred vendor for Wylfa by the end of this year. Both Wylfa and Oldbury could host reactors with a capacity of up to 3300 MW each, Horizon says.

2008 dystopian robots-in-love story, "Wall-E."

A lot of people adored Pixar Animation Studios' 2008 dystopian robots-in-love story, "Wall-E." But one loosely connected organization can probably lay claim to being the biggest, or at least the most dedicated, group of fans.

These are the 16,000 members of the Wall-E Builders Group, an Internet-organized collection of do-it-yourselfers who have each set out to create a live version of one of the Academy Award-winning film's fictional robots.

Genes Found Related to Onset of Menstruation and Menopause

Girls who begin menstruation earlier than average have a greater chance of being short and fat and are at greater risk for breast cancer and endometrial cancer later in life.

Now scientists have found two genes involved in determining the onset of menstruation. The study also found genes related to the onset of menopause. Early menopause increases risk of osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease.

Wings That Waggle Could Cut Aircraft Emissions By 20%

Wings which redirect air to waggle sideways could cut airline fuel bills by 20% according to research funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and Airbus. 

The new approach, which promises to dramatically reduce mid-flight drag, uses tiny air powered jets which redirect the air, making it flow sideways back and forth over the wing.

CES expands size of iPod, iPhone showcase at 2010 event

The Consumer Electronics Association, which organizes the massive Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas every January, plans to more than quintuple the size of its iPhone and iPod exhibit space at the 2010 trade show. The group announced Thursday that its iLounge Pavilion would occupy 25,000 square feet at the 2010 International CES, which starts January 7, 2010.

These are capable of containing one and two people respectively. The inhabitants will stay dry, and the pressure in the cabin will always remain at 1 atmosphere. The inhabitants are therefore guarded against the discomforts and dangers experienced during scuba diving.
